What I'm thinking

So my idea consists of exploring the apperatus of a phonograph. Phonographs are used to spin and project sound from a vinyl record. The round plate spins the vinyl and the needle (which is attached to an arm) is placed into the grooves which in turn initiates sound. But notice it's called a phonograph, not a vinyl record player. The arm, needle, nor plate recognizes what is being being applied to it, it simply serves it's function regardless of content. So what does this say about the arm, needle, and plate, as a delivery system of sound. If you were to put a foreign object, foreign as in not a vintl record, would the audience not recognize the functionality of the apperatus.
